How Dare You Suggest!

Garmin has lost its mind; specifically, the suggested workouts function. This thing suggested I do a 30 min run at 10:35′ without a warm-up. I’m old. I require a warm-up. At least 5 mins!

Then, the following day, it suggested a temp run, 6×1:00 at 7:20′. 7:20′! I’ve never run that pace in my life. 7:20′ is like running from a pack of hungry lions. I think I’ve played in the 8-8:30’s – never a sustained 7-anything for 1 min. Craziness.

So you know what I did? I ran it. Because “can’t” isn’t in my vocabulary. And you know what happened? I ran like hungry lions were chasing me. It wasn’t pretty, it hurt a lot, and I disliked every interval, but I did it.

Then the next day I made an appointment because I suspect something is wrong with my meniscus again. It feels like fireworks inside the inner knee, and the tell tale stretched rubber band. Or maybe it’s all related to my feet. Remember, I had planned to have double toe surgery the early part of 2024, then I scrapped those plans altogether. It is still on the horizon sans date. The suggestion was to handle it sooner rather than later. Like stop signs, right? Just suggestions.

But I continue to run, to make time for exercise, no matter the consequences. At this point, I’d rather be in pain than stop all activity, to the detriment of my body. Maybe that’s why I have spare parts.

Do you follow Garmin’s suggested workouts?

What type of workout did you do last? Strength training.

Footwork

As we (people) tend to either focus unhealthily on the negative portion of an event OR overinflate the positive parts, the middle stuff is often lost or overlooked in its importance. Therefore, I plan to chronicle my foot surgery and recovery so I may look back on it with a rationale perspective.

Long story time: at my pre-op appointment, a different issue was identified which prompted further X-rays and a MRI appointment (coincidentally scheduled for my original surgery date). Now, surgery may or may not happen toward the end of January. To say I was frustrated is to minimize my feelings. Cue the pity party and what ifs. I’m not happy wearing the walking boot; however, I almost hate admitting it – my foot doesn’t hurt in the boot.

The more I consider what everything looks like in these moments, the more I’m inclined to not go through with the surgery. As I’m still weighing the pros and cons, the decision is unclear but, right now, I don’t feel confident in doing it nor do I feel like this is the right path. Something just feels off. So I’ll continue to consider the options, wear the burdensome boot until the MRI results are shared, and pray about it.

This may not be my yes.

I ask you –

Have you ever had foot surgery?

Any advice for wearing this boot?

Go Fast Shoes!

Can we talk about how I’ve been missing out on speed shoes?! Long story short – I have weird, messed up feet from wearing the wrong size boots for 4 yrs. Turns out the Navy only measured one of my feet during gear issuance time (I have two feet) and issued boots that fit one foot properly. Now, I take a ton of responsibility in this mistake because I didn’t speak up. In my defense, bad things tended to happen to people who spoke up so there’s that. Eventually, it felt like the boots fit properly because after a certain amount of time your feet become deformed to fit the shape they are forced into. Long story not so short.

Which leads me to the present. Two different lengths and widths of feet complete with incredibly painful bunions (I think that’s what they are) which leave me self conscious and in pain almost constantly.

team weird feet

Moving on. I wear very supportive Brooks Adrenaline GTS shoes for nearly all my runs. However, I noticed a sale on the Brooks Hyperion Tempo, a version of their speed shoes. When people say “money ain’t a thang” they are lying. It’s definitely a thing! Sale…shoes…yes, please!

My feet felt like walking on clouds. Not super supportive, duh, they’re incredibly lightweight, but they made me feel like I could run faster than I’ve ever run before! By the time you’re reading this post, I’ll have completed another stride workout in these fancy shoes.

Obviously these are not my everyday shoes and certainly not made for long runs. However, when I want to feel fast – these do the trick.
